Walker’s Amichi wins second Newmarket gross sales race

Amichi registered back-to-back wins in sales races at Newmarket when landing the Tattersalls October Auction Stakes in sparkling fashion under Ray Dawson.

The juvenile had picked up £54,110 when landing the Somerville Auction Stakes on the July course in August and the Ed Walker-trained grey showed he was just as effective on the Rowley Mile when denying outsiders California Gem (80-1) and Uffington (50-1).

Winning owner Laurence Bellman said: “Amichi has come back not even blowing he did that so easily. We were hopeful this morning but with so much deadwood in the race it’s hard to be confident how things will pan out. He’s won another £81,000 today and to win two sales races with him is unbelievable.”

Looking ahead, Bellman thinks he may not be able to keep hold of Amichi for next year. He added: “It may be hard to keep him after that as I’m sure the offers will come in and he would be winning four or five thousand if it weren’t for these races.”

Over in the third-placed spot, the members of Whitcoombe Park Racing were pleased with the £14,775 they picked up with Uffington.

Trainer Jonathan Portman said: “This is what these sales races are all about and to finish third with a horse that cost just 8,000 guineas is amazing. It gives us hope to have another crack at Book 3 of the October sales.”
