January is National Train Your Dog Month. But why should us horse people and our horses be left out? #NationalTrainYourHorseMonth
Training your horse is an important thing to do. Horses who know even just the basics, like being easy to catch, halter, groom, and stand for the farrier, are more likely to live long, healthy, and happy lives. Equally important are the techniques used to train horses. Systematic training that breaks goals down into small, achievable steps, coupled with methods that tell the horse when they have performed the desired behaviour are preferred. We should avoid training techniques that say ‘No’ to unwanted behaviour, and training that causes horses to feel fear, anxiety, or undue stress.
Training horses is both an art and a science. The infographic below provides you with five, key, science-proven pieces that are guaranteed not only to help you be a better trainer but to do so in ways that will make your horse happy.
